Standard visitor visa applicants carrying out an Erasmus+ placement in the UK are told which evidence to provide in the supporting documents guidance, which shows an update date of 8 October 2026.

Key facts

  • Who: Standard visitor visa applicants coming to the UK for an Erasmus+ placement, including children (under 18) on an Erasmus+ traineeship or job shadowing placement
  • From: Already in force
  • Source: Visiting the UK: guide to supporting documents

The guidance, published by UK Visas and Immigration, is marked "Updated 8 October 2026". Section 9, on visiting for training, research, paid engagements or Erasmus+, includes paragraph 9.13 for Erasmus+ participants.

Paragraph 9.13 says applicants should provide evidence that they are carrying out an Erasmus+ placement in the UK. The evidence should show the details of the placement: the type of placement, where it will be, and its start and end dates.

The guidance gives three examples of what this could be:

  • a letter from the applicant's home institution abroad
  • an invitation from the Erasmus+ host organisation in the UK
  • a copy of the applicant's Erasmus+ Learning Agreement or Mobility Agreement

The guidance also covers children. Under paragraph 4.2, a child visiting for an Erasmus+ traineeship or job shadowing placement must also provide evidence that their parent or guardian and their home institution have given permission to carry out the placement.

Paragraph 4.1 covers children not travelling with a parent or guardian. It says they should provide additional documents, including a signed letter from the parent or guardian confirming the travel arrangements, and that the application may be refused if they do not.

The guidance also says that submitting or presenting any of the listed documents does not guarantee that an application for a visit visa, or entry at the border, will be successful. It says applicants should bear this in mind when making any bookings.

What this means for applicants

Anyone applying for a standard visitor visa for an Erasmus+ placement should provide evidence of the placement showing its type, location, start date and end date. A letter from the home institution, a UK host invitation, or the Learning Agreement or Mobility Agreement can serve this purpose.

Applicants under 18 on an Erasmus+ traineeship or job shadowing placement must also provide evidence that their parent or guardian and their home institution have given permission. A child not travelling with a parent or guardian may have the application refused if the paragraph 4.1 documents are not provided.
