Report item; no Key facts box.
On 30 September 2026, the Home Office suspended Buckinghamshire New University's Student sponsor licence. The Home Office says this follows concerns about the university's compliance with its sponsor duties.
The suspension took effect immediately. The university was removed from the Register of licenced sponsors: students.
The university has 20 working days to respond to the decision. If it does not show that its licence should be reinstated, the licence will be revoked.
Students currently sponsored by the university can continue their studies while the suspension is in place, as long as their permission to stay remains valid.
The suspension does not affect domestic students, or students on other types of immigration permission that do not rely on sponsorship.
Buckinghamshire New University's Worker and Temporary Worker licences are not affected. The university remains on the Register of licenced sponsors: workers.
The Home Office notice links to further information on how a sponsor licence suspension affects current and prospective sponsored students. The notice does not give details of the specific concerns about compliance.
What this means for applicants
Students already sponsored by Buckinghamshire New University can continue their studies during the suspension, provided their permission to stay remains valid. Students who do not rely on sponsorship are not affected. If the university does not show within 20 working days that its licence should be reinstated, the licence will be revoked. The notice does not set out what would then happen to sponsored students; the Home Office's separate information on sponsor licence suspensions covers current and prospective sponsored students.
